Fun Fall Ideas to Keep Your Family Outside

Updated: Sep 1, 2019

Most people feel a bit sad when the summer ends, but the start of the fall season can be just as fun and active as the longer, sun-filled days of summer. With the weather cooling down and the scenery shifting to a more colorful backdrop, there are plenty of reasons to get out and about during the fall. However, it can be a challenge to stay moving at the same pace when the days seem a little shorter, and more layers of clothing are necessary. Here are a few ideas for staying on track with your activity level for you and the entire family this fall.

During the fall months, the changing colors of the season are breathtaking to see. If you want to embrace the colorful backdrop while also burning some calories, plan to move outdoors in a park or other tree-lined area.

Get out on the Water

In just a short drive, you and the family can enjoy some active time out on the water during these cooler months. The fall offers the perfect weather for a canoe or kayak ride, and either can be done without too much preparation or a high level of physical fitness. Stand-up paddle boarding is another option for those looking to embrace the water this fall. Taking your exercise routine to the water not only gives you ample opportunity to get creative, it also creates a sense of adventure in staying active.

Take in Some Nature

During the fall months, the changing colors of the season are breathtaking to see. If you want to embrace the colorful backdrop while also burning some calories, plan to move outdoors in a park or other tree-lined area. Whether it is walking, jogging, or a group class, simply shifting your exercise regimen outside under the leaves can be a motivating factor in keeping your activity level up this fall.

Tend to the Yard

Without the summer heat, planning a day to spruce up the yard can be a great way to get some activity in for the whole family. Raking leaves, pulling weeds, and planting fall flowers are all great ways to burn a few extra calories without working up too much of a sweat. Remember, even without the heat of the summer, stay protected with enough water and sunscreen if you plan to make it a day-long activity.

Go for a Hike

There are countless places that offer more than a leisurely walk on a beautiful fall day. Put together a short list of nature hikes that are feasible for the entire family, and each weekend, tackle a new one from the list. Hiking is a great way to stay active in the fall while also taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the seasons.

Staying active in the fall can be more difficult than during the summer season, but these creative ideas will help you and your family stick to your exercise goals and routines with more ease. Be sure to take precautions before and after strenuous activity, including stretching and hydrating, and be sure to protect your skin if you’ll be out in the sun this fall.
